When manoeuvring a sailboat, we constantly have recourse to deck equipment; winches, blocks, pulleys, furlers, padeyes, stoppers. All these help us to trim the sails and manage the forces. Understanding how to interpret the loads involved, the angles of the forces, the construction limits of each element, allows us to sail safely and maximise efficiency. Even the eyebolt or padeye that seems so elementary must be known in order to use it correctly. Maintenance, which we will address in the practical part, as well as making manoeuvres smoother, allows us to control the equipment and extend its life.
Topics covered:
- Eyebolt or padeye.
- Low friction rings, blocks, pastels.
- Hoist and Winch.
- Rails and trolleys.
- Stopper
- Wrappers and whippers.
In the practical part we will see how to maintain:
- Winch.
- Winder
- Stopper
